What To Do If Your Car A/C Stops Working

This summer I had the fun experience of having my cars A/C go out. In the blazing heat of a Midwestern summer this was obviously not cool. Not having a lot of money to spend I wanted to try to fix the problem myself if possible. And failing that at least try to better understand the problem before I went to see a mechanic. So here’s a few things I found which may be of help to others who have this annoying problem.
My fan was running but not pushing any cool air. You may have cool air but its level rises and falls with driving conditions. These are the two most common problems I have found from the people I have talked to; and here are some things you can check. If you are getting no cool air at all first check the drive belt. The next most simple is a blown fuse. Your cars owner’s manual will tell you where to check. Next check for leaks from the compressor or the lines going to and from it. The last common problem is a Defective Expansion valve or internal clogging. If you are not mechanically inclined this is the part where you will need to visit your local repair shop.
If you get cool air but not enough, first start with the belt and looking for leaks. If you hear a lot of clicking and the a/c kicks on and off a lot it may be the compressor clutch is broke. There is an electric cooling fan near the condenser make sure it is coming on, or in models that are equipped with a fan blade make sure this fan is turning and is turning very fast.
I hope these tips are helpful and get regular inspections to avoid costly repairs .
